The Sacramento River is the largest in California, descending all the way from the shadows of Mount Shasta to the San Francisco Bay, creating a wildlife paradise in its path. Although the area is popular for its boating, swimming, and camping resources, nothing beats the excitement of the Sacramento River guided fishing trips.

The river’s salmon fishing industry alone accounts for more than $100 million annual revenue and represents over 70% of California's overall salmon catch. Besides the famous king salmon drawing visitors from across the globe, the river is home to steelhead, rainbow trout, striped bass, smallmouth and largemouth bass, bluegill, green sunfish, shad, Sacramento sucker, catfish, smelt, minnows and sturgeon.

How can you be sure to enjoy a successful fishing expedition in the area? Know a few things about the most abundant fish species, gear up correspondingly, and count on a local guide who knows the most productive fishing spots and the most effective techniques. Here is some basic information on the four most popular fish species in the Sacramento River.

Oncorhynchus mykiss is a salmonid inhabiting the cold-water flows fueling the Asian and North American waters of the Pacific Ocean. The Sacramento River is one of the biggest rainbow trout fisheries in the US.

Sacramento River wild steelhead!

The specimens here are wild and vary in size from 15 to 30+ inches, making them a challenging catch on our ultra light, conventional rods and reels. This is a “catch and release” fishery except for a 2 hatchery fish limit, but surely can be one of the best days of trout fishing one can or will experience in their lifetime.  Our clients can catch up to 20 fish or more on a single trip, and for many who fish with us, this trip has become an all time favorite for catching, photographing, and releasing multiple trophy rainbows.

The best area for guided wild rainbow trout fishing trips on the Sacramento River is the 10-mile long section running through Redding, Ca. Our Coleman hatchery winter steelhead fishing is done mostly below Anderson, Ca. The spring, summer, and fall runs are the most productive, with the period between March and January seeing the highest number of visiting fishers and the most impressive catches.

From our solitary anglers looking for some peace and quiet on the river to couples looking to build romantic memories, large families looking to spend quality time together, and groups of friends in search of adventure, everyone will have a great time fighting these wild steelhead/rainbow trout into the net.
